That is what we are trying to do pretty much. Nova has a very low threshold. It seems to be much lower when she is hungry, so perhaps I should start trying this after she is fed. She has learned that sitting gets her rewarded, ie food or out. So she will offer that if we just stand in front of her crate and wait. She has not generalized this behavior if she can not see us however. I have done some work with her by being further away from the crate... Walking towards it when she is quiet and moving away when she starts going off. She understands this game very well, but just can not generalize it at all. Unlike Wazee who can generalize, nova seems not to do so well. On the other hand, Nova is much easier to shape... So I am confused by my 2 littermates...
It does not matter whether or not she gets up as you go to deliver the reward!
Once you mark it, go and reward her. If she gets up and goes ape, ignore it and deliver the reward anyway.
Go sit back down and wait for her to lie down again.
Repeat.
You can also throw the treat into her crate instead of approaching.
Once she is clearly manipulating you, up the ante.
Mark approach for the reward, and when she gets up to go insane, stop. Wait for her to lie down again. When she lies down again, yes! and approach.
Generalization
It's not that she hasn't generalized the sit, it's that you have not cued it.
Your presence is the cue.
Sitting is not a very common behavior in the crate. It's not going to happen near as often as lying down. It's also not very relaxing, it's a 'ready' behavior.
So move to a down, and mark and reward it regardless of how she acts after the mark.
Be sure to let her out with it as well, not just food.
Or you could buy Susan Garrett's crate games. It's based off of a sit and it rocks! Buy it and try it!
Thanks Ron. That is what we

Don't think of this as an excercise, it's a lifestyle.
Capture the behavior when she's lying down.
Mark it yes! and go and reward.
